How to get relief from gastroenteritis

Gastroenteritis is when your stomach and intestines get inflamed. This causes diarrhoea and vomiting.

A virus, bacteria, or parasite can cause gastroenteritis. Norovirus is the most common cause for adults. In children, rotavirus usually causes it.

These viruses spread more in autumn and winter. Other germs can cause it, especially for people travelling to other countries.

Gastroenteritis spreads easily from person to person. You can help stop it by washing your hands and following good hygiene habits.

The United Kingdom Grandma's recipe:

To relieve these symptoms naturally, a grandma's recipe said that you got to:

  • drink at least 5 glass of water/day to avoid dehydration (better if you got mineral water);
  • add slices of citrus or lemon in the water, so it will make it more tasty and will provide essential nutrients to the body;
  • Consumption 100 grams of your favourite broth vegetable like artichoke or that are easy to digest for you;
  • Eat a 250 ml of a noodles or rice soup (2 hours after the last diarrhoea)
  • Eat half of banana or fruits compotes (apple, pineapple, orange).

Naturopaths will recommend us these 10 naturals products or ways to relief from it:

Digestive herbal teas: Some herbal teas have digestive properties, such as those made from thyme, rosemary, fennel, peppermint or sage. These plants can be used alone or in combination throughout the day.

Probiotics:  Probiotics help fix the lining of your intestines. You can find them in yogurts or as supplements. Take them during and after being sick to help your gut heal.

Fruits rich in pectin: Fruits with lots of pectin, like apples and quinces, can help with diarrhoea. Pectin makes stools bigger and less watery, so it helps protect your stomach.

Green Clay: Clay can help your tummy because it soaks up bad germs and protects the inside of your gut.

To use it, put 1 teaspoon of green clay in a glass of water with a wooden spoon. Let it settle, then drink only the cloudy water on top. Leave the clay at the bottom.

Do this twice a day, but not for more than 3 days.

Peppermint essential oil: Peppermint essential oil can help with nausea. Mix 10 to 20 drops with a vegetable oil, like almond or macadamia oil.

Rub it gently on your stomach 2 to 3 times a day until you feel better.

Melissa:  Lemon balm is a plant with antispasmodic properties, which will limit painful contractions of the intestine. To benefit from it, boil a tablespoon of lemon balm leaves in 1 litre of water and drink it throughout the day.

Homeopathy:

Homeopathy can be used instead of regular medicine for gastroenteritis. Arsenicum album 5 CH is often suggested—take 5 small pellets, 3 times a day, until you feel better.

It's best to ask a homeopath for advice on the right treatment for you.

Roman chamomile:

Roman chamomile is a plant used in herbal medicine. It is known for helping you relax and feel calm.

It can also help with heartburn, indigestion, nausea, and vomiting.

Rice water:

Rice water can help with diarrhoea because it has lots of starch. Cook half a cup of white rice in four cups of salted water for 30 minutes.

Drink the water left over, either cold or warm, in small amounts during the day.

Propolis:

Propolis, chewable, spray, or drops diluted in a glass of lukewarm water, is an excellent stimulant of the immune system. It is a natural antibiotic that relieves gastrointestinal disorders. Prefer organic propolis.
