Liver diseases, what can help your health?

Liver function:

The liver is part of the digestive system. It is located under the rib cage, in the upper right part of the abdomen. The liver makes enzymes and bile, which help digest food. It also makes proteins that help blood clot. Additionally, the liver cleans the blood by removing harmful substances, including chemotherapy agents and other medications.

Acetaminophen (Tylenol) overdose is the leading cause of acute liver failure. Liver cancer is now one of the fastest growing forms of cancer in the United Kingdom and one of the deadliest.

Jaundice (yellowish discolouration of the skin and whites of the eyes)

Cholestasis: (reduction or cessation of bile flow)

Hepatomegaly (enlarged liver)

Alagille syndrome: This syndrome is an inherited condition that mimics other forms of prolonged liver disease seen in infants and young children. However, a group of unusual features in other organ systems distinguish Alagille syndrome from other liver and bile duct diseases in infants.

Alcohol-related diseases: Alcohol is the substance most commonly consumed by the United Kingdom citizens. Like all substances, alcohol can harm your body, especially if consumed in large quantities. The term “alcohol” refers to any fermented or distilled beverage that contains an organic chemical compound called ethanol. Too much consumption of alcohol can cause a cirrhosis of the liver

Hepatitis: All kinds of hepatitis, like autoimmune hepatitis, hepatitis A, B or C can target the liver and damage it to the point of its loss. These types of disease are characterized by chronic inflammation of the liver. The inflammation of the liver, that can range from mild to severe. Autoimmune indicates that a person's own immune system attacks another part of the body. In the vast majority of patients, autoimmune hepatitis is characterized by variable rates of intensity, with relapses and remissions.

Hepatic steatosis: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease results from the accumulation of fats in liver cells. Fats in the liver usually develop when a person consumes more fats and sugars than their body can handle. This is more common in people who are overweight or obese, but can also occur in adults with a healthy body weight. A person has fatty liver disease when this accumulation of fat represents more than 5% of the liver. However, when there is an accumulation of single fat, the liver becomes vulnerable to further damage, which can lead to inflammation and scarring of the liver. It is the most common liver disease in the United Kingdom, affecting approximately 20% of citizens.

Primary biliary cholangitis:   Formerly known as primary biliary cirrhosis, primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) is a disease that mainly affects women aged 40 to 60 years. Thanks to improvements in treatment and management of PBC, less than half of patients develop cirrhosis. For this reason, and the fact that cirrhosis is often assumed to be linked solely to alcohol, PBC patients worldwide have called for a name change. Hepatologists believe it was necessary to change the name to better reflect the nature of the disease.

Fibrosis: hardening of the liver.

Porphyria:  In porphyria, cells do not convert to hem in the normal way. Because of this, porphyrins are excreted in urine and faeces in excessive amounts. Their presence in very high quantities gives urine a distinctive port-wine colour.

Sarcoidosis: Sarcoidosis is a multisystem disease whose causes are unknown. Nests of cells appear in many tissues, such as the lungs, lymph nodes, and liver. The disease is known in many parts of the world, but is more common in Western societies. The overall frequency index seems to be around 20 per 100,000. 

A liver biopsy reveals the presence of hepatic granulomas in approximately 75% of cases.

Liver cancer: The most common form of primary liver cancer – cancer that starts in the liver cells – is called hepatocellular carcinoma or HCC, but most people call it liver cancer. Liver cancer usually starts as a small mass, called a tumour, and can grow or develop in more than one site in the liver over time. It usually starts slowly in a liver that has been exposed to certain risk factors for liver cancer. 

Several factors play a role in the development of cancer. Because the liver filters blood from all parts of the body, cancer cells from elsewhere can lodge in the liver and begin to grow. Cancers that start in the intestine often spread to the liver. The liver's ability to regenerate itself may also be linked to the development of liver cancer.

Researchers have identified several risk factors that can make a person more prone to developing liver diseases.

  • Viral liver infection: A chronic infection, hepatitis B or hepatitis C, can lead to the development of liver diseases.
  • Hereditary: Certain types of hereditary liver diseases such as haemochromatosis, which results in excessive iron accumulation in the liver, as well as alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, and tyrosinemia can lead to the development of liver cancer later in life.
  • Excessive alcohol consumption is a known risk factor for the development of alcoholic cirrhosis and others liver diseases
  • Obesity is a leading cause of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and its most severe form, called NASH. People with NAFLD or NASH have an increased risk of developing liver cancer.
  • Tobacco: Tobacco use increases the risk of liver cancer if you already have chronic liver disease.
