How to get relief from gastroenteritis

Gastroenteritis is an inflammation of the lining of the stomach and intestine that causes diarrhoea and vomiting. It can be caused by a virus, bacteria or parasite. Norovirus is the virus that most often causes gastroenteritis in adults. In children, rotavirus is most often involved. These viruses mainly circulate in autumn and winter. Other viruses and bacteria can transmit gastroenteritis, especially in people who travel abroad. Gastroenteritis is very contagious. You can avoid transmitting and catching it by adopting simple hygiene measures, such as washing your hands.

The United Kingdom Grandma's recipe:

To relieve these symptoms naturally, a grandma's recipe said that you got to:

  • drink at least 5 glass of water/day to avoid dehydration (better if you got mineral water);
  • add slices of citrus or lemon in the water, so it will make it more tasty and will provide essential nutrients to the body;
  • Consumption 100 grams of your favourite broth vegetable like artichoke or that are easy to digest for you;
  • Eat a 250 ml of a noodles or rice soup (2 hours after the last diarrhoea)
  • Eat half of banana or fruits compotes (apple, pineapple, orange).

Naturopaths will recommend us these 10 naturals products or ways to relief from it:

Digestive herbal teas: Some herbal teas have digestive properties, such as those made from thyme, rosemary, fennel, peppermint or sage. These plants can be used alone or in combination throughout the day.

Probiotics:  The function of probiotics is to repair the intestinal barrier. They are found in yogurts or in the form of food supplements to take as a treatment, during and after the disease.

Fruits rich in pectin: Fruits rich in pectin, particularly apple and quince, help relieve diarrhoea through their mechanical action: pectin increases the volume of stools and makes them less liquid. They thus act as a gastric bandage.

Green Clay: Clay has strong absorption power, it protects the intestinal mucosa and acts like a bandage, while eliminating bad bacteria. Drop 1 teaspoon of green clay into a glass of water using a wooden spoon, let it sit and only drink the cloudy water (leave the clay at the bottom of the glass), twice a day. (not to exceed 3 days).

Peppermint essential oil: Peppermint essential oil has anti-nausea properties. It is applied with gentle friction on the stomach at a rate of 10 to 20 drops mixed in a vegetable oil (sweet almond, macadamia, etc.) 2 to 3 times a day until the symptoms disappear.

Melissa:  Lemon balm is a plant with antispasmodic properties which will limit painful contractions of the intestine. To benefit from it, boil a tablespoon of lemon balm leaves in 1 litter of water and drink it throughout the day.

Homeopathy:  Homeopathy is an alternative to medication in cases of Gastroenteritis. Arsenic album 5 cc at a rate of 5 granules 3 times a day until symptoms improve is generally the most indicated, but it is better to turn to a homeopath for the most appropriate treatment.

Roman chamomile: In herbal medicine, Roman chamomile is best known for its sedative and soothing action, but it is also indicated in cases of heartburn, indigestion, nausea and vomiting.

Rice water: Rice water is effective in fighting diarrhoea because it is rich in starch. Cook 1/2 cup of white rice in 4 cups of salted water for 30 minutes. The juice obtained should be consumed cold or warm in small doses throughout the day.

Propolis:  Propolis, chewable, spray, or drops diluted in a glass of lukewarm water, is an excellent stimulant of the immune system. It is a natural antibiotic that relieves gastrointestinal disorders. Prefer organic propolis.
